Retirement Homes in Oakville Learning About Spring Symbols

When we think of spring, the image that comes to mind is usually flowers, pastel colors, and easter eggs. That image may be different in different cities and cultures around the world. Here at our Oakville independent living residence, we invite you to learn more about interesting symbols of spring:

  • Groundhogs

Groundhogs are one of the most famous symbols of spring in the western world. In the USA and Canada, Groundhog Day is recognized and celebrated. In Pennsylvania, people from all over gather to see if Punxsutawney Phil, a groundhog emerges from hibernation to see its shadow.  In Canada, Wierton Willie is the famous weather predictor of the coming spring!

The folklore says that spring and warmer weather will begin if it doesn’t see its shadow.

  • Zephyrus, Greek God of Spring

According to Greek mythology, Zephyrus was one of the wind gods. He brought the gentle winds of the west. These winds became frequent during springtime, indicating the time when plants and flowers start growing.

  •  Hot Cross Buns

These are popular food items during the spring season. They are primarily associated with Good Friday and Easter. Some say the cross symbolizes the cross on which Jesus died.

  • The Böögg

The Böögg is a life-sized figure in Zürich, Switzerland made of cotton that resembles a snowman. They make it packed with fireworks and light it up. This is done during Sechseläuten, which is a traditional spring holiday. The burning of the Böögg is meant to drive out winter, symbolizing the transition from cold to warmth.

  • Maypole

The maypole is a tall pole usually decorated with flowers and ribbons. It is used during the Maypole Festival. People dance around the pole while weaving in ribbons with unique designs.

Countries like Germany, England, and Sweden celebrate this festival. It takes place during the onset of spring and is often associated with fertility ceremonies.

  • Nowruz

Nowruz marks the new year on the Persian calendar. It begins during the spring equinox. This marks the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere.

On this day, Iranians spend time with their family having a traditional new year’s dinner. Symbolic patterns of fish also adorn the outside of their homes to attract good luck and prosperity.
