Travel Around the World with Your Dinner Plate

Travel Around the World with Your Dinner Plate

It’s no secret that we’re proud of the high-quality dining experience that we provide for the residents of our retirement community at Queens Avenue Retirement Residence. It’s important to us that the people who call our residence home are served delicious, nourishing meals.

But did you know that we like to get creative with the meals we create for our residents in senior living in Oakville? Food can go beyond just taste and nourishment, it can be a way to experience a new destination without needing your passport!

The “Port of Call” Program

The staff in our retirement community likes to keep things interesting during our various programs by showcasing different countries on our menu and activities calendar. Port of Call is a week set aside to celebrate a specific country through food, culture, music, crafts and traditions.

Recently in March our port of call was Ireland. During the week of March 16th, we featured activities such as:

  • An Irish jig performance with authentic Irish music
  • A “Lucky Irish” teatime
  • A trivia game featuring facts and tidbits about Ireland
  • A game of Scattegories all about Ireland
  • A Celtic music and dance performance
  • A screening of an Ireland travel documentary

And to accompany all these wonderful activities set up by our activities department for our residents in senior living in Oakville, our culinary professionals created a brunch featuring colcannon, sausages, Irish soda bread, and Shamrock cookies. For dinner, there was corned beef and cabbage, mashed potatoes, green salad, and green ice cream accompanying a chocolate brownie with green shamrock icing on top!

Another popular Port of Call that we presented recently was Hawaii.  Upcoming features include Italy, England and France. If you want to learn more, we’d love to talk to you.

Why Do We Do Port of Call?

Providing our residents with fun and interesting entertainment that enriches their lives is as important to us as helping them maintain their good health. Person-centred care is at the heart of what we do at Queens Avenue Retirement Residence, and an important aspect of this is focusing not just on their physical health, but also their social, emotional, and mental wellbeing.
